The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) is India’s premier nutrition research organization working under the aegis of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health& Family Welfare, Government of India. Founded way back in 1918 during the colonial era by a committed Indian Medical Service Official Sir Robert MCCarrison as ‘Beri-Beri’ Enquiry Unit in a single room laboratory at the Pasteur Institute, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu in South of India, within a short span of seven years, it blossomed into a “Deficiency Disease Enquiry”. Soon it emerged as full-fledged “Nutrition Research Laboratories” (NRL) in 1928 with Dr. McCarrison as its first Director.

It was shifted to Hyderabad in 1958 and at the time of its golden jubilee in 1969, it was renamed as National Institute of Nutrition (NIN). The following centres also started functioning at NIN in the later years – Food And Drug Toxicology Research Centre (FDTRC) in 1971; National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) in 1972 and National Centre for Laboratory Animal Sciences (NCLAS) in 1976. The Institute’s activities are broad-based, encompassing the whole area of food and nutrition.

The Institute has achieved close integration in its research activities between the laboratory, the clinic and the community. The emphasis shifted to problem-oriented research, with a view to discovering practical solutions to nutrition problems that can be applied within the existing socio-economic framework. National Institute of Nutrition, over the eighty years of glorious service to the nation, has to its credit an impressive record of achievements in the amelioration of several nutritional disorders of our people.

Through its 100 years of odyssey NIN stood the test of time by remaining ever relevant in tune with the nutritional priorities of the nation and contributing to nation building through nutrition research. To mark the beginning of NIN centenary celebrations the first International Conference on “Nutrition before, beyond and during first 1000 days of life-evidence and action” will be held at NIN from November 26th to 28th, 2017.
